Chapter 14

When the sun broke through a crack in Liwanu’s small tent, he was already awake. As he had been most of the night. His mind was far too active for sleep. In a way, he was thankful for the arrival of the morning. It afforded him the opportunity to get up and move, and possibly think about anything but that night. And the nightmares that were fueled by Empyrean. When he exited his tent, his priority was fixing breakfast. After preparing himself a bowl of plain oatmeal, he noticed Professor Baker scrubbing furiously at a small blood stain on one of his suits.

“I suppose that’s the price I pay for doing this line of work,” he said as he turned to face Liwanu. “You don’t look well, my friend. Did you have a rough night?”

“I suppose you could say that.”

“It was Niccolo’s snoring, wasn’t it? Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. In fact, I find it difficult to sleep in silence now after travelling with him for so long.”

“No, it wasn’t that,” Liwanu said. He took a few bites of his breakfast before continuing. “You know, the thought of getting strong and becoming talented with a bow would have appealed to me greatly a few weeks ago. But to be honest, they don’t mean much of anything to me right now. They are simply a means by which I can have my revenge and prove my innocence. Of course, that will all have to be put on hold while we address the new threat in Rode.” He let out a long sigh and rubbed his temple.

Professor Baker stopped scrubbing at his suit and peered over his glasses at Liwanu. “The primary reason I put this group together has always been and always will be for the benefit of those affected by their travels to Empyrean. Many onlookers would never guess, but this path each of you travel is much more of a curse than a blessing. I believe that when you use the gifts you’ve been given to help others it can become easier for all of you to cope with the difficult lives that you face.”

“We don’t deserve your generosity,” Liwanu said. Professor Baker smiled and walked over to where Liwanu sat. With a slight grimace, he rubbed his shoulder and eased into a seated position.

“I should be the one thanking you,” he said. “I am grateful for the way you helped me. And I’m also thankful for all the others. If I didn’t have all of you to rely on, where would I even be today?”

“Teaching a class somewhere, I presume,” a voice said as somebody exited their tent. “You are a professor, after all, aren’t you?”

“Right you are, my dear Niccolo. How are you feeling?”

“I won’t lie to you, I’ve been better,” the large man said with a sheepish grin as he took a seat next to them. Liwanu noticed the way he eyed his bowl of food, and promptly shoveled the last few bites into his own mouth.
